Profile Information

Please outline your interest/ experience in science communication/ public engagement
I am a Research Fellow in the Centre for Biomimetics at the University of Reading. Academically, I work in a huge variety of multidisiplinary subjects which include entomology, biomedical engineering, architecture, materials science etc.

I am trained and experienced in many areas of science communication such as exhibit development (e.g Eden Project, London Science Museum), written work for magazines, interviews (e.g. New Scientist) and I give lectures at conferences and science festivals.

My sci comm interests are:
(a) in the promotion of the advantages of multidisiplinary science and
(b) how we can steal Mother Natures best ideas in order to find solutions to our own man-made, design and engineering solutions.

Making a career of a hobbie

Isn't that the perfect job?! Doing something you are passionate about and being paid for it!

Our hobbies are the things we choose to do because we enjoy doing them. Wouldn't everyone like to be paid to do the things they love doing? Well I thought, foolishly it seems, that I could do just that. That I could realise my dream and become a full time communicator of science. It is my hobbie, my passion, and I am fortunate enough to have been able, on occassion, to make it part of my job!

I recentl… Continue

Getting the balance right

As a full time postdoctoral researcher with a passion for Science Communication, I often find myself trying to balance the two in terms of time and money.

It's no secret, that I am passionate about Science Communication to the point where I would like to make a career of it. This means that, like a moth to a flame, I am naturally attracted to the organisation and participation of outreach and enterprise events.

This is great for the University and great for the scientific community, but I wond… Continue

Hi Emma, sorry we did not get to meet. It was great you could come. I am hoping to get more high profile names to come down. The allure of pulse project helps me get a few. Richard is really nice and i am sure he could respond favorably to being asked. My email is colin@pulse-project.com email me so i can forward any of the branch info we have on up and coming lectures. I aim to record the rest and make them available for everyone.
All the best
Colin

The way I got in was via an internship at New Scientist magazine. I think the Economist and Nature also do them--worth keeping an eye out for the ads for them
