Your opinion of an online communication tool

Dear Connecting Science member,I would like to hear your reaction to an online communication tool that a colleague and I have developed (see links below). It is called Nature and Biodiversity News and Views. The aim is to present interesting topics relating to nature and biodiversity to the general public. People can read short articles on biodiversity or nature topics, then have their say in the form of quick multi-choice questions and free text. People can also read other peoples' views. We…See More

'Direct' engagement: public talks, events etc

Involved in, or planning to be involved in, "direct" engagement (e.g. public lectures, cafe scientifique events etc)? Here's a place to share ideas.

Using 'new' internet media

Podcasting, blogging, 'Web 2.0' etc offer the potential to engage very wide audiences about science. How can we use them effectively?

Please outline your interest/ experience in science communication/ public engagement
I work for the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (www.ceh.ac.uk) where I am involved in science communication activities. In particular, I am working at the European level to develop a more collaborative approach to communicating about biodiversity and the natural world (for instance, see http://www.alter-net.info/POOLED/ARTICLES/BF_DOCART/VIEW.ASP?Q=BF_D...).

Supporting public communication within the European biodiversity research community

The EU-funded project ALTER-Net has created an online Biodiversity Communication Resource Centre, providing: a directory of useful resources; ideas and inspiration; descriptions of example biodiversity communication activities; biodiversity communication news and events/training courses. You are very welcome to add to the resources on this guide. Thanks.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your comment. I'd not heard about ALTER-Net, it sounds like an interesting project.

Most on communicating about biodiversity so far has been with the RSPB, or when volunteering for local Wildlife Trusts. I was working for the RSPB for an entire summer, so I couldn't really give one answer about how we went about communicating about biodiversity. I was based in Birmingham city centre, and at some country parks; so we met a large range of people, all with different levels of knowledge, enthusiasm and argumentativeness!

Broadly, I think we were quite successful. Our main aim was to give people views of the peregrine falcons that regularly nest on the BT tower in central Birmingham. We had wide range of giveaways from the Open University, BBC Breathing Spaces and the RSPB that worked particularly well in promoting the beauty and importance of biodiversity (calendars, magazines, posters).

The next project might be getting some of my fellow PhD students to talk about their projects on BBC Radio Sheffield for National Science Week 2010 (although not yet done anything towards this aim!). This comment might buck me up : )

Best,

Oli
