The news media were reporting the health hazards of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) this week

Unlike incandescent lamps, these contain mercury and, according to scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute, release around 7 micograms/cubic metre of air if broken. The official guideline limit is 0.35 micrograms/metre cubed.
Thing is, I recall reading an Editorial many years back asserting that, for all the mercury that has fallen between the floorboards of older school laboratories in the past, there have been no discernible health effects.
Friends of the Earth seem to be striking the right balance when they say that a switch to low-energy bulbs would reduce exposure to mercury from coal-fired power stations
