Hi there,
I'm still very much in the process of building this site, and will be adding resources and info that I think will be useful for you. But what sorts of things would you like to see on the network? Any (constructive) feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Clare

It would be nice to have a list of sources of material that could be useful for talks/demonstrations etc. For example, I would particularly recommend the journals School Science Review and the American Biology Teacher for simple experiments and topics useful for communicating science to the public.

Hi Oli,

Great idea and exactly what Connecting Science is for. So I have started a Discussion in the "Direct Engagement" Group for people to add their sources. If you'd like to get things started by perhaps posting links to those sources that you find useful, that would be great!

Best wishes,

Jon
Hi Oli--thanks for the suggestions. As Jon said, we've started a discussion and I'll collect a list of useful resources and links and post a list on the main page of the relevant group.

Bets wishes

Claire

Particularly from my point of view as organiser of a particular branch of the Café Scientifique network, it would be useful to know if members have topics/presentations about which they would care to speak and engage with the public. If such a list could be up-to-date (and I do understand how difficult that is) and geographically organised, it would be a great boon.
Hi David - I think some sort of voluntary register of folks here, indicating areas they'd be happy to talk about and where they are based, could be just the kind of thing that connectingscience could offer... I'm about to disappear to sea for two months, but no doubt Claire will be on the case!
Hi David,
This sounds like a great idea. As you mentioned, a list can be tricky to keep properly updated as it involves constantly chasing people and finding out what they are up to. One way of getting around this could be to use the Groups function on this network.

All you would need to to is form your own group (click on the Groups tag and then on the "Add a group" button), configure the group to your liking, and then start inviting people to join the group (or indeed, Connecting Science). Individuals would then be responsible for maintaining the info on their pages (interests, availability etc) , and might be able to suggest other interested colleagues to you. If the group grows quickly (hopefully it will!), we could subdivide it into geographical locations.

What do you think? Feel free to message me and we can discuss logistics etc

Claire
